A beautiful example of an unwashed Ethiopian coffee from the Sidama Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (SCFCU) in central Ethiopia. The SCFCU was started in 2001 to bring Sidamo coffee to both the international and local markets. Now the SCFCU represents 51 smaller cooperatives consisting of more than 76,000 small farming families. These farmers usually grow their coffee on low density plots using indigenous trees to provide shade. The farmers in the coop enjoy the flexibility to either sell their coffee right away, or sell the coffee into the coop and receive a second payment after the harvest has sold. This practice essentially turns the coop into a savings account for the farmers’ more than 10,000 pounds of coffee.
